I’ve been writing articles relating to ELT for a long time now. Between 2000 to 2005 I had regular articles in The Guardian Weekly’s Learning English supplement and I was also a columnist for English Teaching Professional with two series on pronunciation and materials design. Here are a few that still exist online…

Dear John
My name is Stephen Shine and I attended a recent presentation you gave in Dublin. It was really informative and I’ve used many of your techniques in the classroom to great success. I’m just wondering if I could ask you for 2 video links. One is the Butler Training School link and the other is Modern Times link with Charlie Chaplin. It would be a great help.
Our school, the Galway Cultural Institute received your book in the post today and I have passed it onto management. It got a great reaction from the staff.
Hi Stephen
Thanks for your interest. I’m afraid there isn’t a link to Butler School. It’s on the DVD at the back of Life Pre-Intermediate (Unit 7) Did you get a copy of it? The Chaplin extract is from the first part of the film Modern Times. I downloaded the movie on iTunes but the opening section is also on YouTube if you type in Chaplin Modern Times. Let me know which level of Life you received in the post today.
John
Hi John,
Thanks a million for the reply. I received a copy of LIFE Upper Int in the post. Great book. I’m making a presentation to the school tomorrow on your talk in Dublin and will be sharing the book with everyone for feedback. I’ll be showing video from your lesson also.
Thanks John, much appreciated, ill let you know how t goes
Thanks Steve. Which school is it?

Dear John,
I attended a seminar you gave in Devon a couple of months ago about teaching reading to teenagers. I have decided to pursue the topic for a diploma research project and wondered if you could point me in the direction of any journal articles or the like on the subject.
Thanks a lot
Gemma
Hi Gemma
